I. Preface Serious concerns about the state of the global environment have a relatively short history of just over a century. However, during the past decades environmental education has advanced significantly to accrue a strong, factual evidence base, as well as an ever-growing arsenal of teaching strategies and tools. Today’s environmental education is best described by the following definitions: “Environmental education is the process of recognizing values and clarifying concepts in order to develop the skills and attitudes necessary to understand and appreciate the interrelationship between man, his culture, and his biophysical surroundings.” (One of the first formal definitions of environmental education adopted in 1970, IUCN/UNESCO meeting, Nevada, USA) “Environmental education is defined as a process aimed at developing a world population that is aware of, and concerned about the total environment and its associated problems, which has the knowledge, attitudes, skills, motivation, and commitment to work individually and collectively …
EEN is a group of environmental educational organizations and experts for knowledge and best practices exchange and to facilitate partnerships thorough the responsible organizations.
Theoretical teaching in classrooms alone is not sufficient to instil in students a profound environmental awareness and appreciation for biodiversity. A better understanding of how nature functions, how it is affected and how it affects us has to be achieved. To create connectedness and to value nature, children need to experience nature in a practical way with all of their senses. Environmental Education can substantially contribute to helping individuals and societies resolve fundamental issues related to the current and future use of the world’s natural resources. However, simply raising awareness of these issues is insufficient to bring about change. Environmental Education must strongly promote the need for personal initiatives and social participation to achieve sustainability.
